What you need to need to know for Brexit

Brexit: Shipments to the United Kingdom

As you already know, England left the European Union on February 31, 2020. This exit, also known as Brexit, will have an impact on shipments of goods to the UK. From 1 January 2021 it will have new trading conditions that will take effect.

Here is what you need to prepare for your next shipment to England:

  • VAT Registration: All shippers must register with the UK government and pay taxes in the UK. Registration can be done here.
  • UK EORI number: EORI (Economic Operator Registration and Identification number). This number is also mandatory for exporting and importing goods to/from the UK. Registration can be done here.
  • HS CODE: The Harmonized Framework Code (HS) is very relevant for customs clearance and taxation. It is a number (six to ten digits) that identifies unique items and is required for each package sent to the UK with country of origin information. The HS codes can be viewed here.
  • Special licences: Special licences, such as certificates of origin or EMA (European Medicine Agency) licences, are required for agricultural products such as plants or food. For more information, click here.
